Tremors in Victoria

On May 28, 2023, a 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck Melbourne, Australia. The earthquake was felt in several parts of the city and caused some minor damage. While earthquakes are relatively rare in Victoria, they are not unheard of. In fact, the state has experienced several significant earthquakes in the past, including a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in 1989 that caused significant damage in Melbourne and other parts of the state.

So, how common are tremors in Victoria? And could a very large earthquake occur?

Intraplate faultlines are located within the Earth's crust, as opposed to along the edges of the crust where most major earthquakes occur. Intraplate faultlines are typically smaller and less active than faultlines along the edges of the crust. However, they can still produce significant earthquakes, as the Melbourne earthquake in 2023 demonstrated.

The Potential for a Major Earthquake in Victoria

While the risk of a major earthquake in Victoria is low, it is not zero. The state has experienced several significant earthquakes in the past, and there is no reason to believe that another large earthquake could not occur in the future.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Victoria was a 7.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in 1837. This earthquake caused significant damage in Melbourne and other parts of the state. However, it is important to note that this earthquake occurred more than 180 years ago. Since then, the state has undergone significant changes, including the development of new infrastructure and the growth of urban areas. These changes could make a future earthquake more destructive than the 1837 earthquake.
